Richard Scarry

In the pool today with Erna we got talking about Richard Scarry and relating the story about Richard when he was three years old and we were in Eugene, Oregon waiting in the car for Jim to finish his Doctoral oral exam.  I mentioned to Richard that when he saw his Dad he would be a "doctor".  Richard got very very excited and thought his Dad was going to be one of his favourite characters in the Richard Scarry books,  "Dr. Bones".  It took a while to explain it wasn't going to be the case.  Ah...Huckle,  Lowly Worm...brings back memories.  Richard did love these books!  I knew he was popular but a little amazed by how popular.  A very good way to learn language.  Quite an interesting story in Wiki.

Richard McClure Scarry (June 5, 1919 – April 30, 1994) was a popular American children's author and illustrator who published over 300 books with total sales of over 100 million worldwide.[1]

The very famous "Dr. Bones"

Happy Halloween everyone!

This photo posted on the North American Jame Austen FB page.

Jane Austen would approve of Halloween celebrations in Palm Springs....no fireworks...a pretty much non event.  No trick or treaters have ever ventured into Canyon Sands.

If it's Monday, we must be at Bill's...

Thinking about you, Richard!  It was fun to have all the staff greet us.  We are well known.  Fat Tire beer first then a glass of chianti.  Ah...so predictable.  We got a large Baby Z's Lua  and took half of it home.  That will be tomorrow night's dinner.  Tonight is our leftover Mexican food.

We saw Erna and Marvin on the way out.

The star of the show...

Trader Joe's, swimming in the sunshine, rockin' it up at Las Casuslas

We're so predictable...

Isn't this Lincoln Continental in fabulous shape....lots of great classic cars around.

Jim's lunch....3 item combo....shredded beef taco,  chicken taco,  cheese enchilada  We got a very shady table right by the sidewalk misters so it was a perfect temperature.

My lunch...quesidilla especial.  Lots of leftovers from both lunches.

Enjoying our desert paradise....

We had a very pleasant flight yesterday.   Everything on time although apparently Westjet was having computer problems and there were delays.  Glad we missed them!   Around San Francisco we started to see this smog and realized it was smoke from the Napa  fires.   Unbelievable and it lasted for about 40 minutes of flying.  Very sad.

Marvin chauffeured us home and we arrived to everything working....car started....always a relief.  It's nice and cool this morning but we'll get a few more hottish  days then it will be in the 80's which will be just fine.

Enjoying all the bougainvillea and first thing on the menu today was to look at my wonderful San Jacinto Mountains.  The newspaper arrived.  Breakfast is coffee and granola bars.  I'll soon be at Trader Joe's.

Erna and Marvin's bougainvillea that we see from our our living room,  dining room,  and kitchen.

Saw this on FB today and just had to post...love Maxime!

Another wonderful sunny day

I always used to think it was a bit much when Christmas stuff appeared before Halloween was even over but works out for us this year.  We wanted to buy a small tree with lights and so went over to Michel's today as they had this 4 ft one on for half price...gee,  don't even have to wait for Boxing Day sales.  Since we were close to Las Margaritas we had lunch/dinner there.

All our tree decorations are in PS but somehow kind of works.

I don't recall ever seeing such fancy "real" flowers in the bathroom before.

Basking in the sun...well,  we're always basking in the sun now in our new place.

The decor is always fun to look at.

A little treat for our return home Dec 25...

Well,  we did sample some last night just to make sure it's one of the good ones...

Calvados....apple brandy from France and it tastes even better in the little special Calvados glasses Don and Elaine gave us.  Just love the little glass apples.

We'll soon be swimming in this wonderful pool...you can't beat outdoors and views of the San Jacinto Mountains.

Richard,  you'll be proud of me.  I found my other blogs all by myself:)

Here's the one of our place in Palm Springs.

Our wonderful pool and hot tub....great having all the light and the trees outside to look at.

And I found these bowling photos.

Jim actually got a strike here.

Our final scores.

We're sorry to miss two out of the four concerts but we will be here for the May 6 one.  It seems I can  get unlimited free tickets so let me know if you want to join us then bowl afterwards and get dinner.

Carol and John and Richard come for dinner....

We ordered pizza from Pizza Garden...pretty good actually, but of course nothing like Bill's Pizza in Palm Springs.  We're just getting to know where to order pizza.  These are the only photos I have.  John, hope you have some more.  Carol and John brought these wonderful goodies,  Richard fixed our computer glitches...well,  what else is new?  Lots of fun for everyone.

I asked Richard to take some photos with my big camera and I think he hit the settings button instead of the one to take photos.  Technology does trips up all of us.  Carol posted lots of photos on her blog.

John took this panorama one.  I can do that too with my big camera.  I'll have to learn to use it one of these days as more than just a point and shoot.

Leaving Autumn....arriving in Summer....

I'm looking forward to my Canyon Sands  bookclub....sounds like it's still pretty hot in Palm Springs.  For the topic of  "unforgettable character" I immediately thought of Duddy Kravitz from The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz by Mordecai Richler.  Now,  to find our copy as no copies available in any of the PS libraries...not surprising since Richler is a Canadian author and the book was published quite a while ago.

Good morning!

Attached you will find the All About Books announcement for the November 8 session. Please note that we will be snacking as well as chatting.

Stay cool on what I hope is our last triple-digit day. (How many times have I said that since fall began?)

CANYON SANDS ALL ABOUT BOOKS
WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 8, 2017
HOA OFFICE 2:00 P.M.
We will concentrate on fictional characters
in the November 8 meeting of All About Books.
Be prepared to share an unforgettable character that you encountered long ago or recently. What made him or her memorable? Physical appearance? Actions? Dialogue?
If your character appears in a series, how does the author keep him or her both consistent and interesting?

Since November is traditionally a time of feasting, let’s add food to our session on November 8. Bring samples of your favorite thing to eat while reading OR the favorite food of the fictional character you will discuss.

I had to pick up a prescription at The Cancer Agency yesterday and the leaves were just amazing along University Boulevard and 12th Avenue...wow!

Not my photos but some images of Autumn leaves in Vancouver.  It was a gorgeous sunny day.  The good weather is going to last into November.  Vancouverites deserve this after a horrible Autumn and Winter last year....and not a brilliant summer either.

Looks like Susan and Chris are having a great time!

From Susan's FB post:

Three days of being pampered on the cruise ship have passed. We are in love with Palma de Mallorca and Mahon, Menorca, the latter a very picturesque town we've spent the day exploring. We were treated to a choral concert in Palma de Mallorca's Cathedral last night followed by a chocolate buffet. I am relieved to say my clothes still fit!
