Baby otters

I have always loved otters even after reading how nasty adult otters can be. But who couldn't love these guys!

Baby sea otters’ fluff isn’t just adorable, it’s practical: they can’t sink because their incredibly dense hair traps air, making them float. But they still have to be taught to swim and groom themselves, which is more difficult for humans to encourage them to do without an adult otter to show them.
Another reason why raising orphaned otters isn't easy is because they get sick easily due to not receiving antibodies from their mother’s milk, a condition you may be familiar with if you’ve ever had to bottle-feed abandoned kittens or puppies.

What a dreary day!

Thinking about the Turnell family at the Hard Rock in PV.  I'm not sure we can wait until Mar. 3 to escape this weather.  Maybe I'll start looking for last minute deals to PV.

Weather in PV today....mostly sunny, 77 F.

Made latkes yesterday from Donna's recipe...

The blender was great and really enjoyed the latkes!

Sunrise looking East this morning from the balcony

And our other recliner came yesterday so maybe we'll be able to view a sunset tonight in total comfort!

We sat watching the rain last night snug as bugs enjoying the lights and the planes coming in.

My easy peasy turkey dinner

I was pretty impressed with this product. You cook from frozen and since it's on a rack in the pan, there are lots of drippings so next year I'll make real gravy and use water from the vegetables.
This was packaged turkey gravy but I did put in the drippings as you can see. My grandmother Phoebe's gravy was alway excellent and I remember one day my mother asked her how she did it. She had cooked a roast of beef that day and showed my mother how she scraped the drippings and brownings off the dutch oven that she cooked the roast in. Carol does the same thing with her turkey pan. As she says, it's not smooth perfect looking gravy but it tastes great.

The four of us had lots of turkey on Christmas Day. Jim and I had leftovers Boxing Day for dinner and there was still this amount for lunch yesterday.

This will be a new Christmas tradition thanks to Emi (the grand-niece of John and Carol). She put a happy face on an orange so now all mine have happy faces as well. I can't help but smile when I pass them in the kitchen.

And another new Christmas tradition is thanks to a gift to Carol from her sister. Literary insults will be part of our Christmas crackers.

Betty's gift to me was a page of literary insults intended for my wall. It includes gems like Jane Austen's: "You  have delighted us long enough."

Carol's friend, Linda, gave Emi a couple of really thoughtful gifts.

"My friend Linda took time to carefully explain her gifts to Emi. They included a little purse holding a tiny writing pad and envelopes so Emi could write notes to her parents. Emi  later quietly  confessed to Linda that she couldn't write yet, and asked if she would write "I love you daddy," in a note to her father. Much drawing was also included before the missive was sent. The little purse also contained "worry dolls," which Linda explained is a Mexican tradition in which children tell their worries to tiny figurines that they then put under their pillows. By the morning, the worries are gone, thanks to the dolls that lift them off the children's shoulders. It seems that Linda's thoughtful gifts were great hits."

Many years ago, Richard gave me a set of these "worry dolls". (They are somewhere in my various boxes of memorabilia). Well, worrying about our kids is what Moms do, right. I think this was around the time he was working in San Francisco and would decide to drive home on his own for a long week-end beginning just after a long week working. Obviously, I was worried sick even though he said he went to the side of the freeway and took naps when he was tired. He soon learned to not tell me he was doing this and phoned when he was safe and sound and waiting for the Victoria ferry.
I really enjoyed Carol's blog post about their Christmas Day celebration and just loved John's wonderful photos documenting it. Well, that's a perk of having a professional photographer in the family. Now, if I could just find a local professional to photograph all my wonderful sunsets.

And given this very dreary weather, we were really pleased to see that Richard and Grace found a perfect place for the little fireplace. Their tree looks super and it looks like a bottle of scotch or something Jim and I would enjoy beside it!

Food processor all set to go....

Jim wants it to peel potatoes and slice onions and tomatoes.  Well, the directions do say people with reduced mental capacity shouldn't be using it without close supervision....

So I guess I'll be mainly using it.

The first thing I plan to make are latkes. Donna give me what sounds like a great recipe.

We had leftovers on Boxing Day. I'll look forward to going out Friday. It's been fun baking and cooking but it's time to go out and not do anything but pay the bill!

A wonderful Christmas dinner with Richard and Grace

We had so much  fun and lots of laughs with the corny jokes Jim found. He has a new job for Christmas now....doing original crackers.

The contents of my Christmas cracker.

Having a great laugh at the jokes.

They gave us four Riedel wine glasses for Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Bordeaux...the wines we always drink. For some reason we have never treated outselves to these glasses...thanks so much!

And they loved the little fireplace along with socks for Richard with pizza and beer on them. We also gave them money towards a winter holiday. They think they'll go to Mexico City and then a beach for a while. Jim loved Mexico City when he was on a business trip there.  Great choice for culture and a beach holiday.

They sent us this photo of the little fireplace in front of their Christmas tree.

Derek made up a Christmas quiz for us (an old tradition he did at their annual Christmas party).

We didn't do very well on it...it's really tough!

It's christmas!  Are you up yet?  Here are the quiz questions Derek made up for you...Enjoy and let us know if jim is the winner or if he's passed the torch ;)

All the traditions in place....

Well, this is a new one...Jim creating the Christmas crackers.

Initially, all I got for Jim was this one book of stories from the West End. Then I saw him come in with a big heavy bag of books he got for me so since he mentioned Christmas Eve morning that he would cook if he had a food processor, I went on Amazon and got assured delivery by 9pm. It arrived around 5pm...amazing!

An even dozen...love them all!  In the past 6 years Jim has been getting very cheap second hand books in Palm Spring at the various library book nooks so was a little surprised at the prices. But it's great to support bookstores.  When he was in Kestrel Books, a woman came in to buy a set of something and she said to the owner, "I know you have it marked down to $35 but it's worth the $50 you had it at and that's what I'm giving you."

And it wouldn't be Christmas without my peanut brittle.

And it wouldn't be Christmas without the empty table photo!

And the Christmas crackers await....

Meet Snowstorm...from Linda's blog.

Too cute not to post!

Snowstorm will be 19 years old in two months.  He was the runt of the litter and doesn't look his age.  He's Cheryl's cat and has been an awesome pet for Lexie to grow up with.  Last week he was diagnosed with Dementia!  He's changed in the last little while but is still lovable.

Christmas Eve

Wrapping up a few presents and realiizing I didn't have any gift tags so copied and printed up some from Susan K. blog....thanks, Susan! And then I realized I forgot to buy Christmas crackers. You can’t get them in Palm Springs as they are a British thing it seems and we’ve pretty much spent the last six years in PS for Xmas. Richard brought some down with him one year. So, now Jim is making homemade ones. He’s been having fun with that so this may become a new tradition. I told him he has to include the corny jokes.

I am going to bake a little ham for Christmas Eve dinner and thought I'd have twice baked potatoes. I'm glad I did them yesterday and also froze some for another time. They are rather time consuming so I guess that's why I haven't made them lately. I'm making a cauliflower cheese for tonight and there will be lots for tomorrow when Richard and Grace join us for Christmas dinner. For Christmas Eve, they are having prime rib with her mother and Ray.

And after dinner, we'll keep up the tradition of watching our DVD of Pavorotti's "Christmas at Notre- Dame concert.  We had this in PS and glad we remembered to bring it back. We couldn't find it for a while.

When you read this, it will be Christmas Day.

Merry Christmas to all my blog readers!

Susan's tags and the snowmen Elaine gave us. We had to get new batteries for the big one as he was fading...going strong now!

4 Olives for lunch yesterday

They just started being open for lunch and I really want to support them. There were quite a few people there. So often, when we've been for dinner, there have been very few diners. They have quite a choice for lunch...even fish and chips. Well, I had to try it but I'm really fussy about fish and chips so while it wasn't bad, it wasn't C-Lovers.  Jim had spaghetti and meatballs with focaccia bread...excellent.  And it was very cheery with their Christmas decorations up.

Jim looking very festive with his red scarf...we bought this at a flea market in the south of France many years ago.

I actually ate all the coleslaw since it was very good and had lost of carrot in it. Too much cabbage is a problem for my stomach. I had a few fries and even Jim couldn't finish the rest. The fish was in a panko batter and not bad.

Sun yesterday and a wonderful sunset....

We went for dinner last night at the University Golf Club expecting their prime rib. Well, it was their last day before closing for a month so wasn't available. We had a great meal anyway. Jim had the pepper steak...better than ever, and I had the beef dip for the first time and it was excellent.

And we watched a wonderful sunset from our "sunroom".
