Gladstones's Library

I wish I had known about this place when we were in Wales. Our last night in Wales we stayed in Chester before driving up to Edinburgh to take up a three week car and house exchange. Gladstone's Library is only about a 13 minute drive from Chester.

We had spent the previous night in Portmeirion where The Prisoner was filmed. We splurged on a fancy hotel and dinner. The village was very charming and the ocean was very calm. We had spent the  night before in Aberystwth and there had been a big storm. Our bedroom window kept going up and down all night!  It was one of these old windows on a pulley system. It seemed like there were ghost about. We were on the seaside there too. It was pretty interesting "storm watching" and since it was a Sunday, we had a wonderful carvery meal at a restaurant close by. The"carvery" is a Sunday tradition in the UK and usually a very good deal...roasts of beef, pork, lamb, chicken and all the trimmings.

When we arrived in Chester in the early afternoon, there were crowds of people, many of whom were drunk already. We were told it was a "race day"(famous horse races there apparently) and probably not a good idea to be out on the streets in the evening. We had dinner close to our B & B and headed to bed pretty early.

We woke up to the news that Diana had died so I guess that was 1997. We had taken four months off that year and we were in Paris for three weeks after Edinburgh.. We saw all the flowers at the Pont de l"Alma.
