Finally, we get sunshine and no rain for the moment...

It was nice to wake up to this after all the rain we've had.  But, of course, it is a day when we don't have to do a longish drive.

We were in West Vancouver yesterday having lunch at Tom and Sheila's place.  Tom was a student of Jim's in an SFU course and Jim encouraged him to publish the paper he wrote in the Huxley Annual.  It was quite  a thrill for Tom and coincidentally the copies came to his place yesterday when we were there.  Jim's didn't arrive at our place...hopefully they will arrive today.

Meanwhile in Palm Springs,  they got their first winter storm.  This is the time of year when it happens so not such a bad time to be away although the weather has been great up to this point.  These storms usually don't last too long but there were road closures and flooding.

Benjamin posted this photo of his back yard...looking more like what Vancouver has been lately!

From the local news:

A low-pressure system has brought the first storm of the year to the Coachella Valley. High winds and rain are expected throughout the valley. The storm moved through the Southland overnight and into Tuesday. It is bringing with it the possibility of up to 0.75" of rain for the Coachella Valley.

Lunch with my dear old friends....

The Duthies took us all out for lunch today at Country Meadows Golf Course.  The food was amazing and their local storks even walked by the window while we were dining.   We always have a good time together....thanks so much Carol and Dave!  Linda and Cec know this place well and often go for lunch.  I can see why...what a beautiful setting.

I'm not sure I had seen a stork before!  Not my photo.

It would be lovely sitting outside in the good weather..

Books and Libraries

"A Winter in Mallorca" by George Sand

I did read about a third of this and it was quite interesting but never really got to saying much about being with Chopin on this trip....mainly complaints about how primitive the Spaniards were. It got a bit tiresome. I did learn learn a bit more about George Sand...certainly an interesting person in her time!

Linda's booklist reminded me that I hadn't read a Margaret Drabble for years and I used to read pretty much everything she wrote.  I think my last one was The Witch of Exmoor and I didn't particularly care for that if I remember correctly.  So,  I got "The Dark Flood Rises" and visited my West Point Grey VPL branch for the first time.  It's quite a small library but rather warm and cosy and seems to have quite a big children's section given the size.  It was a Saturday and good to see lots of kids and parents looking for books.  It seems reading still is a big thing for local families here.  I guess that's not really a surprise given all the university faculty and grad students who live in the area.

Great fun at The Sylvia yesterday

We had lunch with Maureen and Helmut yesterday and wonderful to be warmed by friendship and our old haunt.   Lots of good conversation as usual even with the background music being a bit louder  and "contemporary" than we all wanted.  It seems The Sylvia has a new manager who doesn't seem willing to make accommodations for long time customers.   Ah....so even The Sylvia changes...who would have thought!  But we had one of our favourite servers so that was good.  We lucked into that a few days ago when we went to Las Margaritas and had our favourite server of all time anywhere!

There were some new photos up.  I'm glad they keep changing and adding to these.  They are a real addition.  We hadn't seen a photo like this before anywhere.  Looks like a precursor of the "Hop-on Hop-off".

We enjoyed our Red Truck Ale that we don't get at our local venus.  And I tried the Sylvia Pot Pie...made with salmon now rather than chicken.  Actually very good.  Everyone else had the soup and sandwich special.  Maureen let me taste a bit of the tomato basil soup...excellent.

Photo by my guest photographer,  Jim.  He took two but both were blurry!

It was quite the rainstorm yesterday and we were glad to be able to drive from indoors to indoors.  Richard and Grace and Naomi and Ray left for Mexico yesterday....great timing!

I have always loved this stained glass above the side entrance door.

The "5 minute" Christmas tree in our home in Victoria

This came up as a FB memory from 5 years ago.  It was  a larger tree and also had to go to the basement.  Mid-January when we arrive in PS we'll do another "1 minute" Christmas tree.

And for my book loving friends....

Linda' booklist for 2017 on Carol's blog:

Linda with the bunny she knit for Carol's grandniece...not sure how she finds time to do all this knitting along with the reading!

A lovely visit with Donna today.....so good to see her finally!

We all enjoyed Mahoney's.  Donna was particularly impressed by the quality of the burger and I tried something I've been wanting to try....the Pacific Coast Chowder... fresh mussels, steelhead salmon,  cod loin, prawns and bacon with lemon, fennel, cream broth,  and garlic.   It was delicious.

And the rain held off while we were out walking so all good!

My seafood chowder.

My camera seems to be doing weird things like chopping off half the picture sometimes...ah well.

Itty Bitty Book Review: "Paradise News"

 "Paradise News" by David Lodge

This was a late addition to my Christmas books.  I began reading it in PS.  David Lodge is always a delight and this was funny and insightful.  Among other things,  it focuses on how travelling to evermore exotic and distant locations is the new religion and also on religion itself, family, love, aging....a little bit of everything...some things a bit too close for comfort.

Wonderful food and friends...

....and we're even family to boot!  Everything to love!

A super time chez John and Carol as usual and what a bonus only to drive less than 10 minutes.  We really are almost neighbours now.   Just patches of snow in Mount Dunbar today.  Quite a change from this time last year.

We still haven't solved all the troubles in the world but....

Carol has already made a clean sweep of the Christmas decorations and is ready for Spring.

Won't be long before leaves come back on these trees....after all, it is the West Coast.

Mr. Darcy is enjoying some salmon skin thanks to my suggestion.  Amazingly he's not that keen on salmon.  Well,  we certainly enjoyed this amazing salmon Carol served with a wonderful sauce.  You are a chef extraordinaire,  Carol!

The serious business of conversation....

Levees on New Year's Day

"Levees are a tradition that originated in Britain as formal New Year’s Day receptions for government and military. They are carried on in Canada and are especially popular in Victoria, where levees take place at city halls, recreation centres and military establishments.

In Victoria, visitors arrived at the levee by foot, car, and on bicycles with one group coming in a school bus as part of the 20th annual Poor People’s Levee tour, sponsored by local business and labour organizations."

We never attended a levee in Victoria as we're not really into lining up to shake hands with government officials. If I had to make a choice I guess I would do the Polar Bear Swim!   I imagine there are some levees in Vancouver but a google search brought up water retention and dikes for possible flooding.  As always, Victoria's local newspaper had a listing  of all the levees.  Things have changed as free activities are offered by municipalities and also the times are later in the day.  If I remember right,  most of these levees were very early,  like around 7am,  certainly not something we felt like doing on New Year's Day when we were young and had been up until all hours of the morning!

Victoria-area residents have a wide range of options for New Year’s Day:
• Guichon will welcome British Columbians to Government House on Monday for the traditional (and well attended) annual New Year’s Day Levee. Visitors can stop by to socialize and enjoy refreshments and live music.
Guests are encouraged to arrive early to avoid a long lineup to meet Guichon. The levee is free to attend, but food contributions or donations to support local food banks are encouraged and accepted at the door.
The event runs from 10 a.m. to noon at Government House, 1401 Rockland Ave.
• The public is invited to HMCS Malahat, which hosts a levee on behalf of local ships and naval shore establishments.
Despite its name, HMCS Malahat is not a ship, but a naval reserve training recruitment centre in James Bay — and one of the largest reserve divisions in the Royal Canadian Navy.
Visitors can enjoy light fare and meet some of the nearly 130 naval reservists from Greater Victoria. The event runs from 9 to 11 a.m. Monday at 20 Huron St.
• Meet the mayor and members of the City of Victoria council at city hall, but pack your swim gear, as the city’s Crystal Pool and Fitness Centre throws open its doors for a free swim.
The event at Victoria City Hall runs from 10 a.m. to noon, and will be catered by chef David Roger with Songhees Seafood and Steam. Metapop Ensemble will perform pop/rock music.
The free swim is set for 1 to 4 p.m. at 2275 Quadra St. In previous years, more than 500 people have dived into this event.
• Esquimalt has hosted a formal levee since 1947, with an opportunity to meet the mayor and council from 1 to 2:30 p.m. in the atrium of the Esquimalt Recreation Centre, 527 Fraser St.
Families can also choose to swim or skate, with free skating offered at the Archie Browning Sports Centre from 1 to 2:50 p.m., and free swimming at the Esquimalt Recreation Centre between 1 and 3 p.m.
• The public is invited to join Oak Bay Mayor Nils Jensen and members of the council at a community walk, followed by an informal meet and greet. The walk starts at 12:30 p.m. from the lobby of the Oak Bay Recreation Centre, with coffee and tea served between 1:30 and 2:30 p.m. in the upstairs lounge of the recreation centre, 1975 Bee St.
Residents can take in free activities after, including Jazzercise, a fitness-studio orientation, lengths in the pool, a children’s swim or 15-minute free tennis lessons.
The activities are free, but donations for KidSport are gratefully accepted.
• In Saanich, visitors can enjoy a free swim at Commonwealth Pool between 10 a.m. and noon or free skating at Pearkes Recreation Centre between 1 and 3 p.m.
• Sidney Mayor Steve Price and Sidney council will host a tea, with finger sandwiches, cake, tea, coffee and juice. Music will be provided by the Craig Henderson Trio.

New Year's Day at UBC

I guess we shouldn't have been surprised that most everything was closed.  H Mart was open and new to us since it opened after we left for Palm Springs.  An amazing assortment of specialty food especially Korean and also lots of ordinary things given the rather small space.  It was packed today with customers.  I look forward to trying some of these exotic offerings!   Gourmet SPAM (you have to keep going until the last photo)...who knew?  Vancouver...I love you!

I think this is also an absolute must to try!

From the Pacific to the Atlantic....

We made preparations for swimming yesterday....oh no,  not the Polar Bear Swim....we're haven't gone completely barmy!  We put our beach chairs in the trunk since we'll be driving to the beach now and we needed space in the closet for the Christmas tree when we take down our decorations on Jan 6.  This will be another "one minute" Christmas tree....love it!

We drove down to Spanish Banks yesterday and went for a walk and figuring around the West Spanish Banks concession will be a good place to go for a swim in the summer.  We're thinking taking a picnic (or at least wine) will be a good idea since we have the car.  Also,  fish and chips at the concession will make an even easier dinner. The fish and chips are pretty good and the fish is local.   I see they have a salmon burger as well now which I look forward to trying.

Now to the Atlantic.  We had lobster for dinner last night.  Jim also added a steak to his dinner.  Safeway had a great deal on them for New Year's. I paid half what I paid for lobster on a special deal Jensen's had when we were in Palm Springs.

For some reason, here, they never offer to clean and crack lobsters.  I lucked into one female so enjoyed the eggs....yum.  Obviously,  that lobster had my name on it!

Jim doesn't like to work too hard with these things so I helped him by getting the tail ready to eat and cracking the claws.  I strongly believe it tastes better when you do it all yourself but...
