These are the Japanese characters for the word, haiku. Most people will remember this three line poem in a 5-7-5 syllable pattern from school. I found my students generally enjoyed writing haiku. In Japan, the poem is usually about nature but elsewhere anything goes really. I was quite interested to see that NYC has created a number of traffic warnings in haiku illustrated with a graphic. I thought this was a pretty cool way of getting a message across!
