"The Road" by Cormac McCarthy
You have to be ready to read this book as it takes place in a time when America is burned out from what probably was a nuclear war or some such thing. A man and his son are on the move to find provisions in abandoned houses and avoid gangs of people who appear to be eating humans as this has become an option to keep alive. It's a pretty grim story but the beauty of the relationship between the father and son through it all is very moving. This man does know how to write.
