"Through Black Spruce" by Joseph Boyden
This year's Giller winner and very richly deserved. I was so impressed with "Three Day Road" and this one picks up some of the characters and lives of First Nations. His writing always impresses me with its honesty and authenticity. It's interesting he spends half his time in Northern Ontario which has currently been his inspiration and half in New Orleans (he notes in his acknowlegements to the New Orleans gang that "a little rain won't ruin our parade"). I wonder if he will write about New Orleans at some point. I think he could turn his hand to anywhere.
