More Modernism photos...and the Super Moon

We got a great view of this last night but my little camera couldn't do justice.

A very interesting day

Peter Wood (who is very interested in Huxley) came to visit yesterday. He flew in from New Jersey. Jim and Peter had a lot to talk about and he gave Jim this very special present, a first edition of "The Olive Tree" written by Huxley and this copy dedicated by Huxley to Paulette Goddard (an actress and Charlie Chaplin's wife). Jim was thrilled to get it!  We all had a good time.

PAULETTE GODDARD & ALDOUS HUXLEY

She met the writer and philosopher during her marriage to Charles Chaplin , probably around 1937 (the year when Huxley and his wife left the United Kingdom for Hollywood where he became a screenwriter). He would speak many times of how lovely Paulette was with him.
In 1945, they worked together, along with Bénédict Bogeaus and Burgess Meredith, on a proposed film adaptation of his most well-known book, Brave new world(published in 1932). Paulette was to play the main role alongside Burgess; however, the film never saw the light of day. Huxley is the author of over forty books including novels and essays, such as : After many a summer, Ends and means, The Devils of Loudun, and Island ! Huxley, one of the greatest English authors, died the same day President John Fitzgerald Kennedy was assassinated.

And more Modernism photos from the daily email

Most snow on our mountains right in front I've seen in years

These mountains always used to look like this in the winter but not for years. Quite a bit of rain last night...nothing of course like Feb. 14 but created snow. Will be pretty swimming today!

Itty Bitty Book Review: "The Art of Detection"

"The Art of Detection" by Laurie R. King

I do enjoy Laurie R. King but probably prefer her Sherlock Holmes series more than the current time San Francisco cop Kate Martinelli so this one combined both...great fun!

This sounds like fun..

Our social group at Canyon Sands is putting this on.

Sunny this morning....

So we got a nice swim but then changed to cloudy and a few sprinkles so we enjoyed out favourite Chinese restaurant for lunch.

We got out usual...

Hot and sour soup.

It's very cheery on a cool day.

My roast duck...yum.  Eggrolls (behind)  come with the lunch special.

Jim's pepper beef.

Wow...I didn't realize Victoria got this much snow!

It’s no shock that February’s snowfall in Victoria broke local records, but you may be surprised to hear that we actually surpassed the amount snow received by other major cities across Canada.
According to The Weather Network meteorologist Chris Murphy, Victoria received a total of 68 cm of snow since February 1st – that’s 3 cm more than Sudbury ON, the recipient of the second largest amount of snowfall in the country this month.
To be sure, this doesn’t mean we’ve had the most snowfall this winter. In a tweet, Murphy clarifies that there is a much “deeper snow pack in other places because of existing snow prior to Feb. 1”.
However since the beginning of February, Victoria has been leading the pack when it comes to classic winter weather.

And more photos from my daily Modernism Week email

These first two are from CAMP where various  events (usually free) take  place and where you can buy a variety of merchandise and see displays of cool stuff.

Love this!

Janice knows that if she posts a car on her blog I will draw it.

Yes...very cool temperatures in PS

t's not your imagination: Palm Springs is having a record cold streak. The city, famed as a warm-weather winter getaway, has gone 88 days without temperatures hitting 80 degrees, the National Weather Service said Saturday. And no relief is expected soon.
Since record-keeping began in 1922, the longest Palm Springs had gone without thermometers cracking 80 degrees was during the winter of 1969 to 1970, according to weather service meteorologist Adam Roser. That time, the city went 71 days -- from Nov. 26, 1969, to Feb. 6, 1970 -- sub 80.
"It looks like a record," Roser said of this season. "It's going to be over three months of not hitting 80."
Palm Springs hasn't experienced 80-degree weather since before Thanksgiving. The mercury last reached 80 on Nov. 20. On Dec. 19, the high temperature was 79 degrees. On Jan. 26, the city again hit 79.
And the city hasn't seen 90-degree weather since before Halloween. The most recent high temperature above 90 was on Oct. 28, when it was 92 degrees.

A good way to start the day....

It's lovely and sunny and I saw some egrets out front....such beautiful birds but they did fly away at my appearance. I captured the one in the first photo quite well. You can't see them in the others.

And then these photos on the Modernism Week daily posting. It seems they are going to do different things everyday with the photos...great!

Just about everything I love about PS in this photo....sun, San Jacinto Mountains, palm tree, cactus and cool modernist house with this fabulous orange door.  Well, I have an orange door too that we see everytime we come into the garage. Thanks to Erna for the great paint!

Looks like we missed all the fun...giant snowball fight at UBC

The event was hosted by the UBC Party Calendar, and the event kicked off at noon.

This is something that is pretty rare....ice flows in the Fraser River.

Yesterday was the wettest day in 76 years....it felt like it!

From the Desert Sun
"Over 3 ½ inches of rain fell Thursday in the Palm Springs area, bringing traffic on the ground to a virtual standstill, prompting at least three swift-water rescues and closing schools early.
Thanks to an “atmospheric river,” Thursday was the third-wettest day ever at Palm Springs International Airport, records from the National Weather Service show. Valentine's Day will be remembered as the wettest day in 76 years in Palm Springs. The city officially received 3.69 inches."
I  took a couple of photos at 9am this morning. Sunny and blue skies so we probably will get our swim today even though it's coolish. There doesn't appear to be any new snow on our mountains.

I'm amazed in the pelting constant rain more of the bougainvillea petals didn't fall.

This is it for the petals that fell and a maybe less as some  may have fallen before the storm.

Modernism Week begins

Well, it was a pretty soggy welcome for people yesterday. I liked this image that was on the Modernism Week email about events. I wonder if they will have a new image every day. This is pretty cool.

Now, this is a fun guest room. I guess this is from one of the house tours.

Yesterday's rainfall ranked #3 since records began.

1        4.57 inches        Jan. 23, 1943
2        3.80 inches        Dec. 10, 1943
3        3.59 inches        Feb. 14, 2019*
4        3.22 inches        Dec. 9, 1926
5        2.80 inches        July 23, 1948
-         2.80 inches        June 23, 1948
7        2.76 inches        Sept. 10, 1976
8        2.75 inches         Nov. 23, 1965
-          2.75 inches        Oct. 5, 1925
I thought the rain was never going to end and then about 4:30pm there was blue sky and no rain.
My Autumn soup...we had it for lunch.

I was never so glad to see blue skies and no rain!
