All this new fangled stuff

I'm trying to get a handle on Twitter as I can see it can be quite useful especially for getting notice or alerts for things that might be important and it seems to be what so many people are using these days.

I "followed" Celeste Ng just for practice and yesterday there was a notice that it was the first birthday of "Little Fires Everywhere" and there is a playlist of songs for each main character.  Ah...playlists.  I have yet to make one for myself on Apple Music but then I don't seem to listen to much music even though we have everything in the world available to us now. I think of the days of spending my allowance buying a 45 rpm every week...Elvis Presley, Richie Valens, Fabien.

Little Fires Everywhere takes place in 1997 and 1998, so how could I resist the opportunity to put together a playlist of the '90s music I grew up with? Each main character in the book would have listened to very different music, so here is a song for each—one that they'd both listen to and that captures their personality.
Lexie: "Spin the Bottle" (The Juliana Hatfield Three)
Parties, truth or dare, kissing a movie start: this is the perfect blend of teen innocence–meets–burgeoning sexuality, and perfectly encapsulates Lexie's golden, slightly dizzy view of life.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jUAVbGoR81I
Trip: "Insane in the Brain" (Cypress Hill)
For me, this is a classic jump-around-get-stupid party song, ridiculously catchy, just the kind of thing Trip would have blasted from the rolled-down windows of his Jeep. I suspect he'd have been oblivious to the complexities of the song and the connotations of the lyrics and just enjoyed the beat.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RijB8wnJCN0
Moody: "Good Intentions" (Toad the Wet Sprocket)
Moody would've been into alternative and the melancholy of Toad the Wet Sprocket would have been right up Moody's alley. And of course the regret of this particular song—"It's hard to rely on my good intentions"—is Moody in a nutshell.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xejQogXzrPw
Izzy: "What's Up?" (Four Non-Blondes)
The existential angst, the crescendo from resigned frustration to furious scream, the prayer for a revolution: I can't think of a song that better captures Izzy.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6NXnxTNIWkc
Pearl: "One Hand in my Pocket" (Alanis Morissette)
"Ironic" might be the Alanis song that best represents the '90s, but this has always been my favorite, and the most like Pearl: startlingly earnest, a bit confused and contradictory, still figuring it all out and doing the best she can.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CUjIY_XxF1g
Mrs. Richardson: "Pleasant Valley Sunday" (The Monkees)
Of course Mrs. Richardson needs a song about suburbia—but not just any song. "Pleasant Valley Sunday" is about how perfect life isn't quite as perfect as it seems. At the same time, it's a song criticizing conformity and artificiality... by The Monkees, a band manufactured for TV. The levels of irony keep echoing right through that reverb-soaked ending. (Plus, some people insist it's about being trapped in an insane asylum—a whole other level of commentary on suburbia, maybe.)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sUzs5dlLrm0
Mia: "1979" (Smashing Pumpkins)
When I was seventeen, I'd put this song on the tape deck in my car and roll down the windows and just drive. And that's actually what this song is about—youth and recklessness and the intoxication of being constantly on the move.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4aeETEoNfOg
You can hear all of these songs—plus a few extras to accompany key moments in the book—on Spotify.

Some interesting photography

I'm on a FB page called Life on Gabriola as it's fun to see images and events from where my parents had a summer place.  Kumiko Hawkes had a recent exhibit at the Skol pub. Some pretty cool stuff!

This looks like it was taken from the Malaspina Galleries. I loved walking in these. They were just steps from our place.

Tokyo Vintage poster

I do get notified for south of France and Paris vintage posters on Pinterest so I guess my search for Tokyo got picked up and lo and behold a vintage poster of Tokyo on Pinterest as a suggestion. It is a little scary that google seems to track everything. Ah well, the modern world.

That plane doesn't look very "vintage". It could almost be the 787 Dreamliner that Richard and Grace ended up on going to Tokyo. Maybe many of these "vintage" posters aren't so vintage.

Just read this article in the National Post today about the problems with so many tourists in Japan. It is certainly becoming a worldwide problem in desirable places to visit.

Loved this photo

How did those glass towers pick up the turquoise of the boat...love it.  We need more artwork like this  on our high rises.

Tokyo

Richard and Grace get a longer time in Tokyo. Well, not too shabby. It sounds like a pretty fascinating place. I suppose one always wonders where to start. That made me think of the DK Top Ten Eyewitness Travel Guides. I always used to recommend these guides to people going to Paris. London, and other places if they didn't have a lot of time as the choices are good, excellent maps, great photographs and it's a fairly small book so easy to carry around. Well, I guess everyone uses their smart phones now but I still kind of like paper.

Well, I just might go electronic after all. This "visitacity" is quite a cool site. I've been having fun looking at their choices for places like Paris and London.

Pizza night with Derek

Always great fun and so much fun and wine we forgot to eat his wonderful dessert from Bon Ton.

Well, we enjoyed it very much.  Thank you, Derek!  Earlier, we were discussing who would get the fourth goodie since Bon Ton only puts four goodies in a box otherwise 3 are in a bag. Well, we were left with two each so no problem!

Richard and Grace have arrived in Tokyo

And all is well.  Whew!

I guess they've had a Japanese breakfast by now. I was wondering what that was. I picked this up on Quora from an exchange student. It sounds pretty varied and interesting.

A traditional Japanese breakfast is what I had almost everyday for a year. It usually was: rice; pickled daikon and or other pickles; sometimes a raw egg broken on top of the rice; sometimes natto (a brown fermented whole soy bean dish- strange slimy taste); ume boshi (salt pickled sour plum); miso soup; and maybe some leftover fish or chicken from the night before or fresh grilled fish, and nori. Sometimes a small amount of veggies. Hot green tea or coffee. Sometimes the natto has dried bonito shavings (katsuobushi), chopped green onions, spicy mustard (karashi), or sliced dried and seasoned seaweed (kizaminori) on it. Often we dipped the nori in a little soy sauce and using chopsticks wrapped it around a bite of rice.

And then of course there's always MacDonalds...

Itty Bitty Book Review: "Little Fires Everywhere"

"Little Fires Everywhere" by Celeste Ng

Well, she does it again even more so. I am so impressed with this writer. I was wondering how she was going to end it and the ending was brilliant. There is suspense and mystery in this one too but mainly issues that are ambiguous, no right answers and in the end everyone is given value without sentimentality. Now, I would say that's quite a feat to pull off!

One of the main characters is a photographer and her process is quite fascinating. So, it's about what is art as well. And the incredible pull of motherhood. I see it's going to be a mini series. I don't see how a dramatization can live up to the book but we'll see.

Can't get away from storms...

So, I open the newspaper today and on the front page is an article called "North Vancouver woman feels alive chasing storms"....too funny!

She does a blog about it.  Well, that's about as close as I want to get to these storms!

http://westcoaststormchaser.blogspot.com

Latest update

I just picked up this email from Richard. I'm glad their trip will be salvaged but I guess I'll still be worrying.

Jim and I both remembered the Christmas storm incident and immediately thought of that when we heard about their plane having to turn around. That was quite the saga getting to Vancouver as we had to go through the whole ferry thing again the next day. Those were the times of no reservations and long waits since it was Christmas and lots of people couldn't get over the day before. Ah...ferries. Wonderful not to be a prisoner of those these days!

From Richard

Yeah, the Osaka airport was total chaos and who knows when it will be up and running again. I just wish they had landed us in Tokyo instead of turning the plane around. That reminded me of the time you let me open a ln Xmas present early because the ferry had to turn around in a storm. Remember that?

Anyway, Air Canada was able to book us a new ticket to Tokyo today and we were able to get a full refund on our Osaka hotel and book another hotel in Tokyo. So our vacation has been salvaged! The new flight number is AC3 and it leaves at 1:50 PM. A brand new 787, so things are looking up!

Love,

Richard

Richard and Grace safely back in Vancouver

In the middle of the night I got up to read about this storm and was reading about how the airport in Osaka was completely submerged and then an email came in from Richard that the plane had turned around and they were home.

What a relief!

Richard and Grace off to Japan today

Well, hopefully.  There is a big typhoon coming so their flight has been delayed 6 hours and will take 3 hours longer than originally scheduled.  I guess they're taking a different route to avoid the storm. Well, of course being a mom I'm worried, but I know they won't go if there are serious concerns and I'm sure the family in Japan will be very aware of potential problems.

Richard sent me his itinerary. So, I get to travel vicariously...very relaxing and no jet lag.  My preferred mode of travel these days :)

They will be going to Osaka, Tokyo, Sapporo, and Kyoto.

They are taking in a Noh Theatre production that is on the short side and there are snacks and saki.  Sounds like a great idea as I recall from my Theatre 120 course at UBC that the traditional productions can be very long and somewhat incomprehensible to Western audiences.

Catios...looks like an excellent idea!

WHAT IS A CATIO?

A catio is a cat enclosure or “cat patio” that provides feline safety and enrichment outdoors. Whether you have an indoor or outdoor cat, a catio can be the purrfect solution while you enjoy peace of mind knowing your cat is always safe. There are many benefits of catios including protecting birds and wildlife too.

A wonderful afternoon at Bacchus Bistro with old friends

We met at Donna's and she drove out to Linda and Cec's where we were treated to Chambertin wine and goodies then out to the winery and Bistro.  We all just love this place!  The food is amazing and Linda drove from their place taking us on a scenic tour on the way and then drove us back through White Rock on the way back. Lots of memories for all of us at White Rock of times with our families. It has changed but also remained the same in many ways.

I'm working my way through the menu at Bacchus but Linda, Donna, and Jim can't give up on their old favourites.  Cec tried something new too.

I'm impressed that the price on a half litre of Chambertin Red is $17.  Good wine and a good deal.

Linda's photo of us all...except her!

Jim and I couldn't resist getting the roasted garlic soup to start..yum, yum, yum

Cec had the lamb shank.

The scallop potatoes that come with the entrees Jim and I had.  We each got a dish of these tasty delights.

Donna and Linda got the omelette. It is quite wonderful but I'm going through the menu....

Jim can't resist the Boeuf Bourguignon

I had the duck confit...amazing!

Red Burrito

The best thing about this place seems to be the sign and I really liked this photo John took. We were very unimpressed with the food at our local one a block or so away and there never seems to be anyone in there.  Perhaps there will be more business once term begins but I don't recall it being busy during last term.

Richard arrives home tomorrow afternoon.

Just arrived in Frankfurt for a 24 hour layover before heading home on Saturday. Might get a chance to go to the art museum and enjoy one of the beer gardens that line the River Main.

Here’s some pictures from yesterday!

Kuroishi Sushi

We had lunch here yesterday with Liz....always fun to see her! We had a very good dinner here a couple of weeks ago with Donna. It's quite new and we weren't aware of it before Donna mentioned it although it's in our stamping ground of W.10th.  Liz said it was a bakery before.

We got talking so forgot to take photos other than the one I took of the interior when we arrived but we were really impressed with the lunch Bento Box. This one has tempura which I was missing from our DoDo Sushi a few blocks away. I think this will be our go to place for Japanese food.

Liz has chosen "Brave New World" for the book she is hosting for her bookclub later in September so she was really pleased that Jim can come to give a little talk about the book. Her bookclub has a tradition of lunch and wine...works for us!

There was way too much food for Liz or I to eat so we both took home the California Roll.  I'm always impressed with places that give you some chopsticks, napkin, and soy sauce with the doggie bag. And I think it was the best California Roll I've had in a while. Very copious real crab and rolled in sesame seeds...wow!

Set on a background of a placemat with a scene of Paris and a tablecloth I bought in our wonderful market in Carqueiranne.

We get our view back again...

Photos taken at 8pm Thursday evening from the balcony.

We've been missing seeing Vancouver Island...wonderful!
