Modernism Week...a free home tour

Susan and Brian got us tickets for this and it was great seeing this place.  They actually rented a house a number of years ago just a block away.  We loved it and came back to our place for snacks and drinks.  We all do all love Palm Springs so much!

Brian, Susan, Jim

It was cute to see the closets fitted out.

I loved this mural.

And there is an amazing view from the back yard...wow!

Lots of liitle private nooks.

And as we left...free stuff!   A book bag, swizzle sticks and a pen.  We'll enjoy them all.

Snow in Vancouver today

When I received an email from Carol with the subject "John at work" I was expecting to see John taking a photo...not shovelling snow from the stairs!  Carol and Mr. Darcy are cosy inside.  Well,  shovelling snow is definitely a man's job.

76 F and sunny today although tomorrow it gets in the 60's....brrr.

Palm Springs Modernism Show and Sale

We hadn't been to this for a few years so decided to go today.  It was quite fun and lots of stuff for the eye.  And the price of admission is worth just being in this absolutely wonderful PS Convention Centre with the fabulous views of the mountains and surroundings.  Wow...this is an architectural treasure.  Then to drive home passing all the wonderful things we love about Palm Springs.

This table was priced at $12,000....apparently a special piece by Edward Wormley.

This was  Noah's Ark with all the two by two animals.

Jim got talking to this guy and apparently these chairs are by a cousin of Le Corbusier...priced at $6,000 each.

These Hawaiian shirts were quite cool.  This one from the New Orleans Jazz Festival.

I love these outdoor fireplaces and fire pits.

Now,  this chair is made from old cassette tapes....wow...a bit Mondrian like, don't you think?

Now,  anything that calls itself a "LANDYACTH" has got to be the ultimate in cool...

We both loved this old fosball game....or "baby foot" as they call it in France.

And of course it seemed like we had to have a martini when we got home.

Fun at the ballgame yesterday

Jim and Bob (one of our neighbours down here) went to a baseball game yesterday.  The level of play is really quite good and apparently scouts come and a number of the players get minor league contracts.  Jim has followed baseball all his life and Bob was very impressed that a Canadian would know so much.  Bob is a keen fan himself so it was fun for them both.

As Jim got out of the car,  a guy offered them two free tickets.  They have lots of promotions so you'll get a deal most days and not pay the $8 admission.

MONDAY     Local's day $3 admission.  (we could get that)
TUESDAY    2 for 1 Tuesday,  $2 hot dogs, $2 sodas
WEDNESDAY   $1  admission brought to you by Jack in the Box
THURSDAY   Out of Towner's Day $3 admission (we could get that)
FRIDAY   Canada Day $3 admission (we could get that)
SATURDAY  Suds on Sat ($2 Beer Day)
SUNDAY   Desert Willow Day (giveaways)

A cherished memory from FB five years ago.

The fellow in the red hat was a fixture for years as were the couple....now no more.

Lunch at our favourite Mexican restaurant here...they have live music Saturdays. This old couple around 90 danced almost every dance for an hour. Guy in the red hat is a little unusual but is welcomed by the band and has a great time. Very cool that a very attractive woman went to put some money in the band's tip jar and danced with him for a while...he was thrilled.

Modernism Week has begun

It was so cheerful opening the Desert Sun today to see this print by John Agle aka Shag.  I do love his stuff.

This is called "Pina Colada Popsicle".  This one captures just about everything Palm Springs!

A new restaurant for us...Bonta

We have been meaning to go there and some  folks in the bookclub had gone recently and felt it was very good.  The owners have a German background and lived in Argentina so there is quite a variety of food.  They seem very nice and welcoming.  We enjoyed it very much and will be back to try the German specialties since we don't get much of that.

Jim's chicken parmigiana which was on a par with Minerva's in Vancouver except he loves the spaghetti they serve at Minerva's...penne doesn't quite do it for him.

My sole caprese which was absolutely amazing.

Watching some interesting films on Kanopy...El Regreso (The Return)

Drama · After a decade abroad, Antonio returns to Costa Rica for a short visit. Unable to run away as usual, he is confronted with everything he has desperately struggled to put in the past: We have a Costa Rican film in which all the elements align to create a wonderful piece. A good screenplay, great actors (specially the little boy, he's amazing!), pristine direction, editing, etc. The movie is entertaining, heart warming, easy to watch and thought provoking. It's a great insight into life in San José, and the way of life for most people there.

The story behind the film is as interesting as the film.
