Another day of mainly work…but

We worked pretty hard today getting the coffee table finished….well,  I knew the masking tape wouldn't completely work but it wasn't as bad as it could have been.  We'll have to spend some time touching up.  But I  am thrilled with the table and the design I worked out…it is completely Mondrian!  And we had this handyman come by to do some stuff and he is absolutely great…really savvy.  Jim gave him a boost to start his car and that's how we got in touch.  Good deeds do pay off.

Tomorrow the painters,  then Tuesday the carpet for the den will be installed.  Then,  buying a big screen TV and stand and that will be pretty much it.  This handyman can assemble the stand and set the TV up.

Coolish tonight so have the fireplace on.  That's another thing we really loved about Canyon Sands…the fireplaces.  It great in the morning too as it is often cool…not so far,  but tomorrow it will be and in the future.

Well,  we ended up with 1/10 an inch of rain.  Flash flood warning over.

"Oh, the weather outside is frightful"

This was the comment today in the Desert Sun weather.  Big day for the weather people to be able to say something other than various versions of "sunny and warm".  Frightful weather is clouds, 68 F, and 1/4 -1/2 inch of rain predicted.

Really pleased with the way the Mondrian style coffee table is taking shape.  Last paint phase today.  It's going to look great!  It has been necessary to keep the garage door open while working since it's too hot to keep it closed.  The neighbours have been giving the project quizzical looks…!

Two pieces of furniture painted...

What I love about painting this furniture is that now we have used ALL the living room furniture that was here.  The recliner and hide-a-bed went into the den.  So,  good on us for recyling!

Jim's really helping out on the back breaking bending part…couldn't do it without him!

Primer on…about to start the first coat of yellow.

 Looks pretty cool, eh?

Really pleased with the way my artist cart came up.  I'll be storing it here so it's real close to take out on the patio to paint and also right beside the tile floor in the hall.

The lid flips up and Jim had this idea of my doing a painting on that so it's all primed for a painting.

Sunrise at Canyon Sands….beginning of another day in paradise.

Best view is at the tennis courts…but it does look a little like a view through a prison enclosure!

The orange tree in front of our place seems ready to harvest.  Lots of lemons ready so won't be buying any more of those.  Maybe we've bought our last carton of orange juice.

We're really thrilled with our new sun umbrella…goes great with the furniture.

Les pieds dans l'eau

In France,  restaurants that completely give onto the water use the term " les pieds dans l'eau" (feet in the water).  A good term to know as "waterfront" is often not quite that.  So,  you really know that you will be seaside.  I am now "pieds dans l'eau" in the desert.  We have our new blue carpets…wonderful!

And then we went to "Bill's Pizza" to celebrate and also because we were both rather tired.  We've started painting the end tables and coffee table.  What a deal on Mondays!  Folks at the pool had told us about this.  Fabulous pizza  and $2 drinks…like Chianti for wine and Microbrew 16 oz beer…some Monday special.  I think we'll be going there a lot on Monday!  And unbelievably you could get Bud Light for 75 cents a pint…not that we would want it but a lot of people do.

Welcome Back Bar-B-Q

This was a fun event and we met some interesting people and talked to old friends and neighbours.  And I got invited to join a Woman's Group whose mandate is raising money for scholarships and having fun.  Think I'll try it out as the idea of doing something worthwhile other than continuous fun, fun, fun, in the sun is appealing.

Gary and his father are so generous in donating and cooking all the meat and folks brought all sorts of great salads, appies, and desserts.   Since we've been so busy I signed up for chips and dip…glad I did since we had a busy day.  Someone had provided leis and greeted everyone with those.  Someone else had got businesses to donate things so there was a raffle of around 20 items.  Lots of fun and I'll look forward to the Farewell Bar-b-q in April.

Out to Art Under the Umbrellas to buy one of these painted umbrellas.  This time I wasn't that impressed with them.  The fellow does a limited number of designs,  none particularly attractive when I looked closely and thought of parting with $500-$600.  I decided to buy a red market umbrella from Lowe's for $80 and paint it myself.  Then I decided the red umbrella would look great just as it is and I think our patio space is too small to take a painted design umbrella and plants I'm thinking of putting there.

Erna and Marvin loved our chairs and we just love them as well.  They were comfortable before but even more so with the foam replaced.

 Marinated chicken,  burgers and dogs.

 Some of our new friends.

A new art group!

I really liked Dee's "Poppy Field"…link below:

http://www.deehansen.com/#!Poppy-Field/zoom/c19eh/i0url

And sent her my "Poppyfields" I painted in Carqueiranne in 2005.

She sent me this message:

Janice,
Thanks for sending the photo of your joyous painting.   It has a  charm just like the poppy fields.   Google Kathy Deggendorfer...Sisters, Oregon artist (there may be only 1 G in her name.) Kathy is the daughter of Gert who heads Columbia Sportswear.
Her style is whimsical like yours and she has become VERY successful.   Kathy's paintings have been made into quilts, tiles, etc.
Hope you are going to keep painting and will do some paintings of Palm Springs in this style.   People love joyous whimsical paintings.
The Coachella Valley Watercolor Society meets on the 2nd Monday of each month....would love to have you come with me...it is 7 p.m. and I am happy to drive.
       Cheers,
        Dee

So,  I'm going to the meeting….sounds like fun!

Kathy's work is very cool.  I loved this painting called "Sunny Day".

A dark and stormy night back home

Seems it was a dark and stormy night in Victoria and Vancouver…gusts up to 100K.

I got up early this morning to get photos with my new camera around Canyon Sands and especially of the sun hitting the mountains.  Even saw someone walking around Canyon Sands with a parrot on his shoulder…reminded me of Hong Kong and people walking their birds in cages.

Decorating update

The chairs came today and we're really delighted with them…even better than we pictured and just can't wait for Monday to have the blue carpet in.

I've chosen the colours for the rest.  I'll do the same "Gourmet Honey" that is in the hall and kitchen on the kitchen cabinets.  The Master Bath will be "Silver Cloud"…works really well with the sandy colour of marble counter and tile floor.

And then a pale lavender for the second bathroom and bedroom.  This photo doesn't quite capture it.

We decided to replace the carpet in the den as well…this looks great with the red walls and other stuff in there.

Last round of painting will be next weekend.  Jim and I will start on the Mondrian colours and design for the coffee table and end tables.  I have all the paint and it will be cooler for the next few days so a good time to be doing that.

We bought this set at the Canyon Sands garage sale last weekend for $25.  We decided to put them in the main patio as they are wonderfully comfortable and the footstools store under the chairs so take up very little room.  A great deal as one thing i've noticed is patio type furniture seems quite expensive around here.  Pretty much everything else is a deal.

It's really all been tremendous fun and I'm under budget!

Meeting the neighbours

We did know some of our neighbours before like Erna and Marvin,  Ken,  Paul and we have been meeting others…great folks like Betsy and Bill from around Boston ,  Chuck,  who is an elementary teacher and has a lovely dog (bearded collie I think) and Dee,  who is an artist who I also really enjoyed meeting and loved her website:

http://www.deehansen.com

And then Saturday we are going to the "Welcome Back Bar-b-q".  Sounds like fun.   A son and his father who live here year round supply and cook all the meat.  Participants are asked to bring appies, salads,  etc.

Susan and Linda loved the paint job and approved of the next phase.  The fabric has come in for the chairs and they should be ready early next week.  And the carpet should also be installed Mon or Tues. All coming together for Christmas.

Photos of the new paint job

These photos show things a little better.  Susan and Linda are dropping over this morning to see it and give some input into my next paint choices for the rest.

Cool sun umbrellas

Erna reminded me of these very cool sun umbrellas…some of which have Van Gogh type designs which would be perfect for the patio garden.   Whenever I see them I would love to buy one and take it home but with flying it wasn't practical.  Now it will just be a short drive to our place here!  They sell them at the College of the Desert Street Fair on the weekend so can't wait to go.

This is a photo I took last year of some that were being sold at the La Quinta street art.  Well,  can't seem to post it.  It's in my blog of Feb/13.

Garden Ideas

Since cactus grow in the south of France I'm going to include cactus as well as lavender  and sunflowers and of course bougainvillaea.  Erna is going to help me with it and she has some cactus cuttings for me.  I also have this idea of creating a "window" with shutters and a flower box since I miss my flower boxes from our Victoria house.  The shutter will be very provençale….rather like this painting I did.

Lots of new cool stuff for Modernism Week!

WOW!

We just love these colours and what we've done…wow.  Just fabulous.  Did we ever luck in with these painters…thank you Mike and John.

These photos give some idea of the colours

Rather hard to capture in photos but you get the idea.  We're really pleased with it all.  The yellow is very hard to capture.

Painters have arrived!

Will I ever be glad to get rid of these dull beige walls!

With the help of Linda and Susan I have pretty much figured out the colours for what's left….the two bathrooms and the guest bedroom.  For the Master Bathroom I'm going to go a lighter shade of the Lemon Sorbet so the colour will flow from the walls in the bedroom and entrance to the bedroom and bathroom.

For the other bedroom I'm going to go a lightish lavender and then a lighter lavender in the bathroom.  So this will be my "Provence" room.  I'm going to have a lot of fun with that!

I'm thinking now instead of a cactus garden since there are lots of cactus displays around Canyon Sands is creating a Provence garden with lavender and sunflowers.  Apparently lavender grows very well in a desert environment.

Visitors from Victoria today...

Susan and Linda came over for lunch today and we had a lot of fun and they confirmed my paint and decorating choices and gave me some ideas for the other rooms that need doing.  Nice to have that all sorted out.

The final colour I had to choose was for the Master Bedroom and I went through quite a few ideas but "Lemon Sorbet" won the day.  It actually is Benjamin Moore's Colour of the Year.

Chair gone…guess someone liked it.

Looks like they got their money for the chair…was gone today when Jim went in to buy a bookcase.  John reminded me of the famous Ming dynasty chairs that St. Matthias Church got $780.500.00 US for.

One man's treasure...

I felt this was the world's ugliest chair and I couldn't even stand having it in the garage!  We donated it along with a old bed to Revivals….our favourite thrift store.

We were in there the other day and saw the chair priced at $225 and being called an 'Antique Chair"!  Good for them if they can get it.  We're really pleased.
