Bread and other musings...

McDonald's are making a more concerted effort to fit in by introducing a range of burgers that are tailored to the country they can be purchased in.  So, it all starts with the McBaguette in France. The rustic bread will include a Charolais burger with French-made Emmental cheese and mustard.

Well,  the bread looks good but as with almost all baguettes in France these days it will be mass produced.  Monique maintains there isn't a decent bakery in all of Bandol and I can believe it.  We were very lucky in Carqueiranne to have 5 bakeries that baked on site.  The bread was fabulous as Don and Elaine and Susan and Alan can testify to.   We have all been in the search for the "Carqueiranne baguette" since to no avail.

The other day I read a review of a book called "The Last Supper" in which famous chefs describe what they would choose for their last meal. r

Massimiliano Alajmo of Le Calandre in Italy asks for just a loaf of bread and Sicilian olive oil.

It got me thinking that a Carqueiranne baguette and some first class Stilton cheese with a fine St. Emilion  and perhaps some Okanagan cherries at their peak of ripeness wouldn't be too shabby.  So...food from two countries in the world I love and have travelled in often and the cherries from wonderful childhood summers camping in the Okanagan.  Oh....and maybe some corn on the cob:)

C.W. Parker Carousel

Don Wrigley, who saved the 1912 C.W. Parker Carousel from the PNE, poses with Lilly Belle at the Burnaby Village Museum Burnaby, B.C., March 30, 2012. The carousel is celebrating its 100th anniversary.

I'm sure I rode on this at the PNE in the 50's .  It's wonderful to know it's been preserved and you can also take a ride on it for $2.30.  We'll have to get out to the Burnaby Village Museum soon.

Mussel Mania

Took a cruise to Granville Island yesterday to indulge in moules,  frites avec dijon, pain, et biere.  We're getting to be pretty set in our ways...Jim gets the Provencale because he get loads of chorizo sausage and I get the Thai because I love the coconut milk and veggies.

Got a kick out of the cement truck whose mixer was painted like a bunch of asparagus even with the elastic around it.

France election 2012: Nicolas Sarkozy bans cheese from Elyse Palace - Telegraph

So, Sarkozy doesn't drink wine and now has banned cheese from the Palace menus....goodness...what has the France  come to!

This is a very modest cheese plate for the French.  While in Carcasonne  having a wonderful dinner they brought us at least 50 cheeses and 1/3 were goat and sheep.  Love live cheese!

Walking in the sunshine along Denman yesterday...

A little surprising to find in the "free bin" outside a thrift store.  The other day Jim picked up a book here for free he got $2 in trade for at Lawrence's.

Very cool new fruit and nut store...also spices and other goodies.  For a nut lover like myself this might be fatal.  Bought some lime, sea salt pistachios.

This empanada store is fairly new addition and we look forward to trying them.

New New York Taxis

Cars are something I'm not generally very interested in but I do like what NYC has chosen to be its new taxi especially the rooftop window so you can get a view of the skyscrapers.

More info:

We’ve been hearing a lot about the so called “Taxi of Tomorrow,” but until recently we’d only seen renderings and prototypes. Now, on the eve of the 2012 New York Auto Show, following a special gathering in SoHo, Manhattan, Nissan has provided details on the actual version that will apply for hire on the streets of the Big Apple.
Features on the production version include a glass roof “presenting unique features of the city,” sliding rear access doors, easily reached grab handles, opening side windows, fully flat passenger floor, USB connectivity for the driver, a mobile charging 12 volt outlet and USB port for passengers, breathable antimicrobial (germ repellant) seat fabric and even a Hearing Loop System for the audibly impaired.
The NV200 is also the first New York City cab to be crash tested and certified with a full driver/passenger partition and sports front and rear occupant curtain airbags, with seat mounted units for the front row.
All NYC taxi NV200s will be powered by Nissan’s 2.0-liter gas four-cylinder engine and in anticipation of the severe use the cabs will be subjected to, the motor boasts a 150,000 mile warranty (NYC’s roughly 13,000 yellow cabs collectively travel around 500 million miles each year).

The Iron Lady

I loved Meryl Streep's performance in this film but I did say to Jim that I did have some mixed feelings making such a film while she is still living.  I can understand the family not being very pleased with it all although apparently the daughter, Carol, did write about her mother's dementia.  I'm not really sure that gives public licence to make such a film.  Somehow I missed this huge controversy over the film.  Perhaps I wouldn't have been quite so swept away by Streep's performance if I had.

I think now I'm leaning towards fewer mixed feelings and feel the film shouldn't have been made.

A rarity and soon to be rarer....

Jim's had a rather miserable cold this past week but was feeling somewhat better Saturday so we treated ourselves to Las Margaritas for lunch and we both started with their wonderful torilla soup.  Then off to Lawrence's Bookstore on 41st and Dunbar...a real oldtime bookstore and lots of fun to browse in.  Jim picked up a few things and I restrained myself from buying a book on Vancouver since I have purchased various things lately like the Chuck Davis "History of Vancouver"  and  Claudia Cornwall's "Curt Lang's Vancouver" along with the Fred Herzog.

Angry Geese at the University of Waterloo

Fern,  where are you with your slingshot...they could have used you here!

Angry goose at the University of Waterloo.

From the Weather Network:

After one of the mildest winters on record in Southern Ontario, the number of geese on campus increased, and they seemed to be more aggressive than normal.   “They give you a little look and then they charge at you,” says student Michael Chung. “Their wings go big and they fly at you, and never stop honking. It’s just crazy.”   Temperatures began pushing 30 degrees in late March, and the Canada Geese began banding together. It was as if they were gaining strength from the warmth.   Then it turned cold last week. And that made the geese very angry.

The whole situation came to a head on Friday, when the geese entered the Davis Centre.  Dan Anderson is the Director of Police Services at the University of Waterloo, and he said he received a call in the afternoon that the geese had taken over the library. He was also made aware that a hostage was involved.  “We were surprised, the First Responders, when they got here, that the geese had actually set up a perimeter and were giving intelligence inside as to where we were coming from,” says Anderson. “So we had to be a little more covert in the way we first attacked it.”  Anderson added that once the tactical teams understood what the situation was, they were able to breach the perimeter.  “They managed to push them back, get a hold of the hostage and get her out of there."  The hostage Anderson is referring to is UW student Leslie Pucan. Pucan’s friend, Jacqueline Serran, told media that she knew how dangerous geese can be.  “I was really, really concerned,” Serran told us. “It was crazy. I had trouble sleeping last night. It wasn’t a good night.”

Pucan agreed to meet with The Weather Network’s Natalie Thomas to discuss her ordeal.  “It’s really hard for me to be back at the library,” Pucan told Thomas.  Held hostage for nearly four hours, Pucan was studying for exams in the library when the geese broke in.
“All of a sudden I heard this big honking noise and I didn't know what it was,” Pucan says. “It startled me. And I turned and it was the geese. And I went to go get my phone and it was gone. And I just saw, it looked like the biggest goose I'd ever seen. Maybe the leader or something. He just took it and he was running through the stacks."  Once the tactical teams were close to her, Pucan swears she heard one of the geese say something.  “He honked at me,” Pucan recalls. “And he just said ‘Happy April Fools.’"  Yes, HAPPY APRIL FOOLS from The Weather Network.  Thanks to our friends at the University of Waterloo for playing along. And for the record, no geese were harmed in the making of this story.

In search of a good steak....

Donna and I had lunch today in Kerrisdale (very yummy Thai restaurant) then off to Windsor Meats on MacKenzie to buy a steak.  I ended up with a ribeye he cut specially for me since I didn't want it too thick...10 oz which we'll split.  We love our steak but don't want too much these days.
I also found a fruit and vegetable market in Kerrisdale that had prices and quality like you only get in Chinatown.  And Donna alerted me to free parking in London Drugs.  All good discoveries as I quite like the Kerrisdale Village and its shops and restaurants.

Lots of exotic meats in the store and I was interested to see a pintade.  We had pintade with Monique and her parents at a restaurant in Annecy many many years ago.

Seems a bit on the pricey side...think I'll stick with my Cornish Game Hens.

Good on the Germans!

There seems to be a bit of a trend of German truck drivers having their trucks painted realistically to advertise what they transport....rather cool, I thought.  Don sent this along.

Japadog (Japanese Hot Dogs) "Best hot dog" - Vancouver, BC | Follow Me Foodie

On our way swimming to the Waterfront Centre we pass the Japadog stand....this incredible popular food stand sensation which now has a stand in NYC.  I think you can't live in Vancouver and not try it although it is now getting rather mixed reviews of "over-rated" and "overpriced".  I see they now have  a restaurant on Robson so we'll probably do that option.

This is from a foodie blogger:

**Korubuta Terimayo – 6/6

  • Most highly prized pork! Kurobuta 100% pure all natural Berkshire pork. Kurobuta is the Kobe beef of pork. $6.47 Including tax $7.45
  • It’s a Korubuta pork sausage with Teriyaki sauce, Japanese mayo, fried onions, seaweed/Nori.  This is still the best and most popular hot dog. I still love it.
  • It’s the juiciest sausage and most flavourful. I’m a bit sad though because either they took out, or forgot, the fried onions that’s supposed to be in there.
  • It’s sweet, savoury, hearty and I love the crispy nori on top.

Of course you can’t forget the Wasabi Mayo on any of the Japadogs! (Free condiment)

CANstruction

Team: Fluor
Name: oCANpogo
Winner: Best Meal
From the mysterious depths of the popular Lake Okanagan in British Columbia, Canada, comes oCANpogo. oCANpogo is a fierce 15 metre long sea-snake with a body that undulates when it swims in Lake Okanagan. Those who have lived to tell their tale claim it is a prehistoric serpentine creature, with the dragon’s head, sharp teeth and webbed feet.

This is quite a cool project that has groups competing to make sculptures out of cans and then the cans are donated to food banks.  They're on display this week at various places along Georgia and right around where the newly refurbished Rosewood Georgia Hotel is so we'll take a peek in there since we haven't seen the new incarnation yet.

Team: AMEC
Name: Tutankhamen’s Mask
Winner: Best use of Labels
The mask of Tutankhamen is an icon from the past,
In tuna and in turkey, his image is recast,
We picked the teenage pharaoh for this year’s Canstruction theme,

A rather interesting debate going on about how densification creates less urban sprawl and how the "burbs" are bigger greenhouse gas emitters than the inner city.  I can see both sides of the issue.

First time cooking magret de canard....

I bought this magret at Les Amis de Fromage and it seemed like a simple dish to prepare and I know Monique loves magret de canard.  I had second thoughts when Monique said she has stopped preparing it since so many time it's tough!  However, it turned out perfectly and we all enjoyed it and it went extremely well with this fabulous St. Emilion wine that Monique brought.  Jim and Monique enjoyed a game of foosball or "babyfoot" as they call it in France.

Super evening...

We had a great time last night beginning with tapas and wine at Cloud 9  then the Renee Fleming concert which was excellent.  We enjoyed the traditional arias and all especially enjoyed her rendition of Endlessly that Metallica does.  Take a look.

Overnight in Victoria

We went into Victoria to attend Nin's service.  Derek gave an wonderful tribute to his mom and we were very glad to be there.

We stayed at the Hotel Grand Pacific and enjoyed a great swim and had dinner there with Derek and Mary Sunday night.  It was great to see them and we also got to see Don and Elaine and Monique.

Monique is coming into Vancouver today and staying at the Sands Best Western which is close to us for three days and we are looking forward to having some good meals together and we're all off to see Renee Fleming who is performing with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra at the Orpheum Theatre Wednesday.  I think the last time we went to the Orpheum was to see Charles Aznavour many years ago.

From dark to magnificent light...

Yesterday started out being one of these black days that seem like it's evening, then the sun came out and we went for a swim.  Then to see the movie Monsieur Lazhar at the International Village Cinemas.  Great deal with free parking and then we went to the foodcourt and picked up butter chicken, lamb curry, naan, and popadoms for take out.  Wonderful food and dined looking out a a magnificent sunset.

I highly recommend the movie...a real treat.

Storyline:

Bachir Lazhar, an Algerian immigrant, is hired to replace an elementary school teacher who died tragically. While the class goes through a long healing process, nobody in the school is aware of Bachir's painful former life; nor that he is at risk of being deported at any moment. Adapted from Evelyne de la Cheneliere's play, Bachir Lazhar depicts the encounter between two distant worlds and the power of self-expression. Using great sensitivity and humor, Philippe Falardeau follows a humble man who is ready to transcend his own loss in order to accompany children beyond the silence and taboo of death. For Nin

Nin passed away last night in hospice.

Jim and I met Derek's mom, Nin, in the 70's and we were immediately charmed by her infectious smile and vivacity.  We had recently been to London for the first time and loved the city so meeting a real live Londoner was quite something for us!  She had a tremendous spirit and sense of fun and we loved her.

She took up French and had Monique as her French teacher and of course they were kindred spirits...packs of dynamite in tiny packages!

I interviewed Nin when I had this idea of doing video life stories and she was a wonderful subject.  I loved hearing her talk about her experiences in the Blitz and later her early life in Canada as a war bride.  From one of the biggest cities in the world to a small town in the boonies, small children, and a husband, Andy, who went back to complete his university.

Quite the times but I can imagine her smiling through it all and recently she told Monique she would be leaving this life with a smile on her face.

NIn,  this is how we'll all remember you, singing and dancing, and we will miss you.

* These  little videos are from July 14, 2010 when Nin invited Jim and I, Monique, and Derek and Mary to celebrate Bastille Day at Carlton House.
